My name is Taylor Stephens, and I am a second-year medical student at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. My research focuses on the pediatric population, specifically looking at the use of anti-depressants (SSRIs) and their impact on brain neurochemicals in youth. This research has been conducted through Children's Mercy Hospital in collaboration with KU faculty. I am also working on a project that aims to develop a contraceptive counseling protocol for youth experiencing homelessness. I’ve always been drawn to the pediatric population because of the resilience they show and the uplifting spirits they possess. Working with youth allows me to use my knowledge and resources to provide interventions early in life, helping give children facing adversity and health challenges the best, healthiest future possible.
I completed my undergraduate studies at Kansas State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Human Health Biology with a minor in Psychology and a secondary major in Integrated Health Studies. This background provided me with a well-rounded education in patient care and medical knowledge. While at K-State, I also conducted research in the psychology department focused on addiction and relapse behaviors, studying the neural responses associated with these behaviors.
Sharing knowledge has always been important to me throughout my educational journey, whether through research, as a teaching assistant, or as a mentor. I’ve come to truly value fostering passion and curiosity in others, and this will continue to guide me as I pursue my future professional goals.
