Ene I. Ette, Ph.D. (Glasgow), is a fellow of the American Colleges of Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), the American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy. He is an honorary professor of pharmacometrics/clinical pharmacology at the University of Namibia, a Fullbright Senior Specialist Fellow, the 2006 ACCP’s Therapeutic Frontier Lecture Award recipient for outstanding contributions to pharmacotherapy, and the 1999 recipient of ACCP’s Russell Miller Award for sustained contributions to the pharmacotherapy.
He was the first recipient of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Excellence in Review Science Award (1996) for excellent research advancing drug development/evaluation science through pharmacometrics. His findings became the basis for the 1999 FDA unique Guidance for Industry: Population Pharmacokinetics that changed drug development/evaluation worldwide. Ette is a prolific author with over 109 publications (i.e., primary research articles, reviews, an editorial, and book chapters) and the senior editor of the worldwide classic pharmacometrics reference textbook, Pharmacometrics: The Science of Quantitative Pharmacology. He has introduced many innovations in the design and analysis of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies and early-phase clinical trials. Dr. Ette is an inventor/co-inventor with several patents, and chief among them is the first-ever patent for shortening hepatitis C treatment duration from 48 weeks with interferon-based therapy to 24 weeks with telaprevir, making treatment duration shorter than 24 weeks possible.
In addition to experience and influence in academia and the FDA, Dr. Ette was the global head of Clinical Pharmacology at Vertex Pharmaceuticals from 1998 to 2006. While at Vertex, he was appointed a Special Government Employee in the Office of Clinical Pharmacology, CDER, from 1998 to 2001. Currently, he is the chief scientific officer and president of Anoixis Corporation – a clinical pharmacology, pharmacometrics, statistics, and drug development service company.
