Peter H. O’Donnell, MD, is a translational researcher with advanced training in clinical pharmacology and a practicing medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of genitourinary malignancies, specifically bladder cancer.
Dr. O'Donnell's research focuses on pharmacogenomics, specifically assessing whether clinically actionable pharmacogenomic information can be utilized if barriers to implementation can be overcome. He has been PI or Co-I/Project Lead for six large NIH-funded studies examining clinical delivery of pharmacogenomic results to aid treatment decision-making.
Nationally, within the NIH-funded Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology cooperative group, Dr. O’Donnell is Chair of the Pharmacogenomics and Population Pharmacology Committee, where he oversees a large portfolio of pharmacogenomic and clinical pharmacology studies. He is a past Chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (ASCPT) and a current Associate Editor for ASCPT’s flagship journal, Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. He is an immediate-past member of the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology.
At the University of Chicago, Dr. O’Donnell is Chair of the Committee on Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics, and Director of the institutional NIH T32 fellowship training program in Clinical Pharmacology. He is Deputy Director of the University of Chicago Center for Personalized Therapeutics.
Dr. O'Donnell has been recognized for outstanding contributions to research and education by being awarded the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics Presidential Training Award, American Association of Cancer Researchers Future Leaders in Translational Medicine Award, and the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators at The University of Chicago.
