Systems Thinking, Complexity and Pharmacometrics in Drug Development and Evaluation
The human body is a complex system, and so are some diseases that affect it. Therefore, scientific investigations to understand and treat certain diseases require a paradigm shift that combines integrative and reductionist approaches, particularly with the abundance of data, both big and small. Pharmacometrics, an emergent science, enables the usage of synthetic (integrative) and reductionist approaches to characterize and understand systems through the creation and use of models. In the presentation, I will discuss pharmacometrics from a (modified) complexity perspective and its propagation from population pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics to clinical trial simulation and systems pharmacology and into the future through a combination of reductionist and synthetic thinking and its transforming impact on drug development and evaluation.
